We'd like to tell you about it!

ABOUT

General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) is an International organization of community-based, volunteer Woman's clubs dedicated to Community service.

HISTORY

In1868, when a professional journalist, Jane Cunningham Croly, was told women were not welcome while covering a dinner at an all-male Press Club honoring Charles Dickens, she formed a "Sorosis" for women.  (A Sorosis is a Greek work denoting to gather together).  Twenty-one years later that club collectively joined members of similar clubs in 19 States to form the General Federation of Women's Clubs.

OUR MISSION

For more than a century, GFWC has encouraged woman to improve their skills, expand their abilities and their special sensitivity to society's problems.  Important topics involved promoting education, preserving natural resources, encouraging healthy lifestyles, working on behalf of the elderly and people with disabilities, advocation for issues of concern to women, children and families, and supporting participation in the Arts.

GFWC SUPPORTS

Supports Clubs to have the freedom to shape programs to suit their Community needs.  The clubs encompass women with a wide diversity of ages, interests and experience, which are united by a dedication to Community improvement through volunteer service.  The advantage of this service allows them the opportunity to exchange ideas, develop leadership skills and form life-long friendships.

GFWC ILLINOIS ANTIOCH WOMAN'S CLUB

The GFWC Illinois Antioch Woman's Club is a sector of the International, National, State and District Women's Clubs.  It is a non-for-profit organization that was founded in 1921.  Since its inception, its members have been dedicated to pursuing the "intellectual growth and unity of effort toward civic improvement."

From the beginning of the GFWC Antioch Woman's Club, its members have been of service to the Community with such outstanding achievements as forming the Antioch Library and sponsoring the first boy Scout Troop.

The Civic work continued through the Depression.  With the outbreak of World War II, part of the GFWC Antioch Woman's Club efforts shifted toward aiding the war effort. This effort continues today in their involvement with disabled veterans.  Other notable areas of achievements include their involvement in building the Hiram Buttrick Sawmill, street beautification, and providing benches at the recently erected Antioch Railroad Station.

Another major effort of the GFWC Antioch Woman's Club is providing scholarships to High School graduates, including scholarships in the area of women continuing their education.  Scholarships are also awarded each May at the very successful Very Special Art Show held at the Antioch High School, which includes the art work of all local schools.

GFWC Antioch Woman's Club has made contributions to the Antioch Rescue Squad, Safe Place shelters for battered women, Canine Companions, Cancer and Brain research.  They have assisted the Lions Club with building the Village public swimming pool, contributed to the Antioch Historical Society, the local Community Theatre Group PM&L, and the William E. Brook Wetlands Project.  The contributions go on and on.

In addition to community service, the GFWC Antioch Woman's Club includes many social activities such as Bridge Clubs, Literature (Book) groups, luncheons and card parties.
